Gigi has made an EP and for those of us who have been listening to her music for some time, it is about time too. This short but perfectly bite-sized EP makes a great introduction to Gigi’s sumptuous vocal charms.
The opening track Perfect Stranger is funky from the start with a devious bass riff hanging over the whispered voice telling us to ‘whisper a prayer’ which sets the tone for the track – a tale of longing, desire and stranger-danger. There is a tremor and depth to Gigi’s vocals which is captivating and the compelling bass riff combine with this to create a song which sticks in the mind. The sax of David Baptiste (Light of The World, Beggar and Co.) adds a delicious short but uncompromising solo to the middle section which makes the link between the story telling and the more orchestral second half of the song.
Who That Girl Is is a beautiful number, opening with a short, sazzy introduction on trumpet from guest Kenny Wellington, ( Light of the World) leading to the introduction of the vocals before the vocals join. And the vocals are a treat – emotional, expressive and virtually pitch perfect. Combined with the careful structure of the song this is immensely listenable.
Through Winter starts with a vocal break with Gigi’s voice making the intros before the guitar backs her up and then the band come in with support. This is a soft number but with a darker side in the lyrics. A song of love, loss and missed chances this is a well worked and cleverly structured piece.
With Gigi there is a sense of a real feeling for the music, which is original and well-supported by a band including Mark Harold on bass, Rob Blackham on guitars and keys, Andy Goodhall on drums and Bexy Wood on backing vocals with inspirational guests Kenny Wellington on trumpet and David Baptiste on sax and flute. Gigi is singing well within her capabilities and she has a decent range and lovely tone to her voice.
