Matteo Finali’s Final Step presents Disconnections.

At a time when we all need to connect more, Final Step’s fifth album - Disconnections - remind us about the joy of turning off our devices and listening to real, live music.

Disconnections shows Final Step at its funkiest, most polished best. This is electronic jazz with all the delights that a studio can bring a band that proved its live credentials in its earlier albums. Guitarist Matteo Finali has brought together a select group of musicians for the latest iteration of Final Step - Mirko Roccato on saxes, Alessandro Ponti on Hammond organ and keys, Federico Barluzzi on bass and Dario Milan on drums.

While some of the tracks on the album are written individually and collectively by Finali, Ponti and Milan, there is the stunning Prelude by Oscar Peterson, Pat Martino’s Interlude (Country Road) and finally Postlude by Art Renshaw, Finali’s erstwhile guitar tutor.

If you only listen to one track, you should make it the title track. Disconnections is a thing of joy and not least for the bari sax line that comes in near the end and finishes the whole track with a flourish. That final few bars shows Final Step in all its glory, with Finali’s guitar floating over the top of some stunning Hammond organ from Ponti and flourishes from the whole band.
